چکیده

We experimentally investigate the interaction of two counter-propagating spatial optical solitons (nematicons) in bias-free nematic liquid crystals. We demonstrate the existence of vector solitons composed of two nematicons propagating in opposite directions and analyze their stability versus relative distance and input power. We observe the dynamic instability of two counterpropagating nematicons in the form of time-dependent splitting and spatial entanglement.

Interaction of nematicons in a bias-free liquid crystal cell

We study experimentally the propagation dynamics and interaction of spatial optical solitons in a bias-free cell filled with nematic liquid crystals. We reveal and measure long-range effects due to the cell boundaries for a single nematicon as well as for the interacting in-phase and out-of-phase nematicons. We discuss the effect of initial beam focusing and relative input angle on the interact...

Patterned electrode steering of nematicons

The interaction of spatial optical solitons in nematic liquid crystals or nematicons with electrically induced waveguides is investigated experimentally and numerically. Our observations show that broad multimode waveguides are able to guide nematicons and permit an angular steering of the signal. This opens the way to combining the all-optical properties of spatial solitons with the reconfigur...

Nematicons and Their Electro-Optic Control: Light Localization and Signal Readdressing via Reorientation in Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals in the nematic phase exhibit substantial reorientation when the molecules are driven by electric fields of any frequencies. Exploiting such a response at optical frequencies, self-focusing supports transverse localization of light and the propagation of self-confined beams and waveguides, namely "nematicons". Nematicons can guide other light signals and interact with inhomogenei...

Discrete propagation and spatial solitons in nematic liquid crystals.

We investigate, for the first time to our knowledge, the discrete propagation of near-infrared light in a voltage-controlled array of channel waveguides in undoped nematic liquid crystals under planar anchoring conditions. This novel geometry enables us to drive the system from one-dimensional bulk diffraction to discrete propagation and, for larger excitations, to discrete spatial solitons, or...

Reorientational versus Kerr dark and gray solitary waves using modulation theory.

We develop a modulation theory model based on a Lagrangian formulation to investigate the evolution of dark and gray optical spatial solitary waves for both the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and the nematicon equations describing nonlinear beams, nematicons, in self-defocusing nematic liquid crystals. Since it has an exact soliton solution, the defocusing NLS equation is used ...
